A series of
events were organized on the second day of Tourism Week by the Şırnak
University School of Tourism and Hotel Management. The program included the
"Nuh’s Table Cooking Competition" award ceremony and a panel on
"Food and Culture," which was attended by Yavuz Donat, a writer from Sabah
Newspaper, along with Şırnak Governor Birol Ekici, Şırnak Mayor Mehmet
Yarka, Şırnak University Rector Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış, Şırnak Chamber of
Industry and Commerce President Osman Geliş, Mardin Artuklu University Vice
Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Doğan, Faculty of Tourism Dean Prof. Dr. Lokman Toprak,
lecturers from various universities, local culinary associations, and many
students.
The program
began with a moment of silence and the singing of the Turkish National Anthem.
Doç. Dr. Sedat Çelik, Head of the School of Tourism and Hotel Management,
delivered the opening speech, thanking the supporting institutions, including
the Şırnak Governor’s Office, Şırnak Municipality, Şırnak University Rectorate,
and various culinary associations. He pointed out that despite Şırnak’s vast
tourism potential, both public institutions and travel agencies have not fully
recognized it. He emphasized the need for a Şırnak Tourism Vision and the
establishment of the Şırnak Tourism Provincial Council to oversee all
tourism-related activities.
Rector Prof.
Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış also addressed the participants, highlighting Şırnak's
high international trade capacity due to its proximity to Iraq, Syria, and
Iran. He stressed the province's great potential in both nature and faith
tourism, and the importance of promoting Şırnak as a "Prophet City"
due to its association with the story of Prophet Noah. He also discussed the
hidden natural beauties and mountains in Şırnak, the need for appropriate
facilities for mountain sports, and the region's strategic location with
international trade routes like the Habur Border Gate.
Şırnak Mayor
Mehmet Yarka followed with a speech, emphasizing that Şırnak is more than just
an ordinary city on the map. He described it as a city of history, culture, and
deep respect between people of different religions, and a place where food
reflects the cultural richness and hospitality of its people.
The final
speech was given by Şırnak Governor Birol Ekici, who highlighted that global
cities are now becoming the focus, and that Şırnak has a promising future in
tourism, with potential to compete with well-known tourism destinations like
Antalya, Muğla, and Istanbul. He spoke about the ongoing development projects,
including the construction of terraces in Cehennem Deresi and a mosque at the
peak of Cudi Mountain, and emphasized Şırnak’s reputation for hospitality.
After the
speeches, the Şırnak Promotional Video was shown, followed by the award
ceremony for the "Nuh’s Table Cooking Competition" and a group photo.
At the end of the event, Rector Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış presented Yavuz Donat, the veteran journalist, with publications from the university as a token of appreciation.
